The Bavarian Center for Applied Energy Research (ZAE Bayern) is a registered non-profit association which was established to promote scientific activities in all fields significant to energy research. The association supports a research institute with divisions in Würzburg, Garching, Erlangen, Nuremberg and Hof, employing more than 200 employees.
The Solar Factory of the Future as group of the section renewable energies in Nuremberg develops production technologies for the manufacturing process of PV modules of the third generation. The experience of the Solar Factory is focused on the development of printable ink formulations, optimization of printing and structuring processes as well as the processing and characterization of OPV modules. These modules are processed on both, flexible plastic and glass substrates, with either large area slot-die coating in combination with laser structuring or ink-jet printing. Based on new materials, device engineering and optical and electrical simulations the production of semitransparent modules with an efficiency loss of less than 10 % in comparison to lab cells has been achieved which paves the way for various applications.
